To become a province, there are 8 criteria, such as the district's population being at least 100 thousand and being at least 30 kilometers away from the city centre. Current urbanization, transportation status, hinterland, economic diversity and educational status are among the criteria to become a province.

During the Seljuk period, under the rule of Alaeddin Keykubad I, the region gained geopolitical importance. Characteristics of the Mediterranean climate are seen in the region. It is mild in winter and hot in summer. While it has a nine percent share in Turkey in terms of tourism, it has a thirty percent share in property purchases by foreigners in Turkey. Tourism started to develop especially after 1958 and became the most active business line in the district, and this caused population growth in the region. Thanks to its warm climate, it is suitable for many sports activities and cultural events. The mayor of the district is Adem Murat Yücel, who was elected to office in the local elections on March 31, 2019.
